Jason Bajada Reflects on 10 Years of Loveshit

Graphic: Valery Lemay

For most up-and-coming artists, there’s a balancing act between channeling their influences and developing their own unique identity.  When looking back on his third and breakthrough album, Loveshit, 10 years on from its original release, Montreal singer/songwriter Jason Bajada credits the album’s success with striking this balance for the first time on record.

LGBTQ+ Representation in 2018

2018 has been a strong year for LGBTQ+ representation on screen. Many films have focused on the issues the community is facing that have historically not been covered through the lens of film and television.

Live Out Your Hunger Games Dreams at Dodgebow Archery

Do you miss those days when you walked into gym class and the teacher told you dodge ball was what you’d be playing? Have you ever watched The Hunger Games and all of a sudden wished you could shoot a bow and arrow like Katniss Everdeen? Ever thought of combining these two sports?

The Force Academy: Montreal’s Star Wars Themed Activity Centre

As a child of the 80’s, let’s just say that I grew up surrounded by Star Wars products, be it school notebooks, shirts, coloring books, posters, trading cards and stickers, SW-related TV specials (yes, I saw the Ewok Adventure’s initial airing), or of course, the toys. I’ve always found the franchise wonderful, as it attracts diehard fans of all ages.

CJLO Best of 2018

This incredibly long year is coming to an end. If you read any music publications, you've probably noticed it's list season. A season full of controversy, hot takes, safe choices. Just in time for last minute Christmas gifts, here is what the wonderful people at CJLO liked the most this year.

Lesser Evil Throw Caution to the Wind on Debut EP

When thinking of uses for a RV, it’s natural to picture families on vacation travelling across the country to visit various national parks and tourist destinations. That’s not what Montreal’s Lesser Evil had in mind, however. Instead, the duo recorded their self-titled debut EP in a RV secluded in the woods, without any electricity, running water, or the most precious of resources in today’s world, Wi-Fi.

Helena Deland's Homecoming

“I hope that show becomes my most important memory of 2018,” says Montreal’s Helena Deland with a laugh.  Deland is referring to her headline performance at this year’s edition of M for Montreal, the four-day festival spotlighting rising local talent for industry folk and music fans alike.  The show is the culmination of a whirlwind year of gigs for the singer-songwriter, including a U.S tour in the spring (including a performance at Austin, Texas’ venerable SXSW festival) and European one last month.

CJLO @ Heavy Montreal: What a Weekend!

After another fantastic year, Heavy Montreal has now sailed off into the distance and left here’s some of the thoughts some of our DJs that attended had. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Heavy Montreal: Worth the Weight

ÎleSoniq 2018 – An interesting line-up

Even though ÎleSoniq has “only” three stages, as opposed to six for Osheaga, it was still hard to choose which show to run to, as each stage was far enough from the other to have non-stop music. On Friday, the first show I saw was Klingande. This DJ is known, among other things, for his very successful “Jubel (original mix)” track, which was basically the soundtrack to the summer of 2014. It’s a very dreamy and relaxing track. Klingande kept this soothing style in his set, which did not prepare anyone for what was coming next : Herobust.

CJLO is Going to Île Soniq! Are You Ready to Jump?

Île Soniq 2018 is the fifth edition of Montreal's biggest EDM festival, which seems to be gaining traction every year. Despite a few setbacks, the festival has adapted and overcome these challenges and presents an intense lineup for this year’s edition.

CJLO @ 77 Festival 2018!

I have been waiting for the second edition of ’77 Montreal Festival ever since its successful debut last year, and it did not disappoint. This year, organizers wanted to step up their game with more bands and more stages. There was the Jardin stage, reserved for smaller acts, with very little separation between the fans and the performers, and there was the Ouest stage, which would attract larger crowds and would televise the acts and massive screens on either end. I wanted to see everything, so I found myself running across the festival grounds, often having to leave midway through one set to catch the end of another.

CJLO @ JFL: Judah Friedlander: America… Still Number One

Judah Friedlander is taking Just For Laughs by storm with America… Still Number One! Friedlander challenges American exceptionalism and US domestic foreign policy while commenting on racism, sexism, gun control, climate change and health care in his unique solo show.

CJLO @ JFL: Kill Tony Podcast: Kill or be Killed

For some reason, they say don’t meet your heroes. Last night, one of my comedic heroes was in Montreal and I wanted to meet him. Tony Hinchcliffe will be the first one to tell you he’s one of the top young rising comedians in the world, and we have to believe him. Being the go-to roast writer, this unapologetic comedian has written on six of the last Comedy Central Roasts as well as writing and performing on All Def Snoop Dogg Smoke Out (Snoop Dogg’s roast). His comedy is like rapid-fire. It’s quick and painful… If you’re on the receiving end of it that is.

CJLO @ JFL: Matteo Lane presents: Streisand at the Bon Soir

Matteo Lane presents: Streisand at the Bon Soir is a comedy cabaret show you’ll never forget! Comedian and opera singer Matteo Lane and pianist Henry Koperski transformed Cafe Cleopatra into a swanky jazz club on July 23rd and 24th. Together, the two channeled their inner Barbra Streisand, playing some of her greatest hits as well as songs by other iconic women, like Liza Minnelli and Mariah Carey.

CJLO is going to Heavy Montreal!

We at CJLO are always stoked for Heavy Montreal to come around and rock out in a style befitting Montreal's connection to the loudest, heaviest acts, and this year is no different. To help you to decide what you need to see this year, some of our DJs have compiled a list of bands they're looking forward to seeing. Also, if you have some time in between bands, or if you are sitting at home during the weekend, why not tune into our live broadcast (which we'll be posting times for on our social media accounts) for live interviews with bands and music from this year’s groups and past.
