Since the introduction of harsh vocals in heavy music, metal singers have tried to imitate the sounds of the animal kingdom, from the bark of a dog to the squeal of a pig. And although us humans have come close, nothing strikes fear in our primitive minds quite like the roar of an apex predator. Take for example the title track off of Body Count’s latest album Carnivore, which features the roar of a lion in the chorus, ripped straight from an internet video.

Plein(s) Ecran(s), a showcase of Court métrage

The festival Plein(s) Ecran(s) takes place from January 13th to January 24th and focuses on 66 short feature films, 6 of which are categorized within the Programme Jeunesse section. Selections from Quebec and France are entered into an awards competition as part of the festival. As well, there will be the return of the Plein(s) Écran(s) podcast, available on most podcast platforms, which provides interviews with some of the directors. Here are some of the short features that I got to see during the run of the festival.

Uncovering Exorcist’s Mystery Horror Metal Album

Back in 1980s, a mystery album titled Nightmare Theatre (1985) dropped in record stores around North America and parts of Europe, shocking those who were lucky enough to grab a first pressing. The band responsible was Exorcist, but they certainly weren’t a “band” in any sense of the word. They didn’t play any shows, didn’t do any interviews, nor did they release any follow-up material.

Fantasia Festival 2020: Premier Genre Film Festival is what you need to beat the heat

There are many unanswered questions in these uncertain times. This was the case when the city of Montreal decided to postpone their summer festivals, forcing many festival organizers to return to the drawing board. This is to say that I am happy that the 24th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival, the premier genre festival, will be taking place virtually, with the titles being accessible online. Even though I am going to miss the atmosphere of the Concordia theatre halls filled with the audience alongside the CJLO DJ’s, the meows, and the experience of Montreal’s downtown scene, the cinephile in me can’t wait for this year's Fantasia Film Festival happening from August 20th to September 2nd.
