Fantasia 2019: Week 1 Review

The 23rd edition of the Fantasia Film Festival has taken over Concordia University's downtown campus until August 1st. Defining itself as a premiere genre film festival, there is truly something for everyone. When I attend Fantasia, I always create a master list of all the films that I want to see. This year it took close to two hours to create, as the festival's list of films stretches more than 130 titles from all across the globe. I tend to gravitate towards the films in Documentaries From the Edge and Camera Lucida. There is a method to the madness in making a master list - doing so allows me to track my free days with the screenings of the day.

Fringe 2019: Edging with Mike at Le P’tit Impro

Edging With Mike is not quite what you would expect given the title. Upon entering the intimate space of Le P’tit Impro, you see a kind-looking, unassuming man behind a work station, diligently and patiently sharpening a knife. That is Mike. Mike likes to sharpen knives, and also likes to talk about the things he likes.

Fringe 2019: Ink at La Chapelle

Ink was a visual metaphor for the cyclical self-destructive relationship between an artist and their craft. It was a brilliant depiction of how one invests themselves in their work and how the result of doing so can cost so much. It was also a beautiful story of one man overcoming debatably self-imposed adversity, and learning how to create without suffering.

Fringe For All : Top Picks

This year’s Fringe-For-All showcased so much incredible talent and so many hilarious, exciting, and intense shows that narrowing down my top picks was a challenge. Here are a few that stuck by the end of the night:

L’appel du vide by rats?!

Natasha Perry-Fagant has been putting on award-winning Fringe shows for years now, and somehow I’ve missed all of them. This is probably because horror isn't really my scene. However, this feels like the year to branch out and try new things, and there is something about a grieving witch trying to find inner peace by ending the world that is strangely relatable.
