Remember if you will, back to a simpler time, all the way back to June 2013. The air was fresher, the sun was brighter, and CJLO was helping to decide which metal group should play at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany. Well, it's time to decide again, and one of the organizers, Jon Asher will be on Grade A Explosives to talk to Andrew about the battle and getting your band signed up. If you're in a metal band now, you should definitely listen in to see what you can do to go to play in Germany. So tune in from 4-6 PM Sunday, January 19th for this and more good stuff.

On Monday, January 20th, Haze World will feature a guest mix by Jason Rule of CFMU's Astral Travelling show. Jason's taste runs pretty similar to a typical Haze World, particularly the dance music, heady vs. physical end. Expect to hear him playfully running through a selection of favorites with some unlikely surprises as well.

In an effort to combat these winter blues, CJLO proudly presents a new batch of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed hosts and DJs. Their shows provide a Spring-like renewal to our airwaves.
Let's start with Fredy, who takes a new guest cohost every week on a trip across Canada, stirring new Canadian music into the delicious musical stew of Hiway 1 (Sunday, 1:00PM). You can also tune in later that evening for the thematic episodes, cinematic music, and thoughtful musings of Ms. Hill on What's up with That? (Sunday, 11:00PM).
Wednesdays were also spiced up this Fall. You can start your mornings on an upbeat note with Je Suis TBA, featuring frequent guests, seamless Frenglish, and an insider's selection of local music (Wendesday, 9:00AM). Be sure to stay tuned that afternoon for Cued for Thought, where guests are asked to brave a quiz and trivia show that is both irreverent and nerdy (Wednesday, 14:00).
Tune it at midday on Thursday for a double-dose of up-to-date info. The Link Radio are kicking off their second full semester, bringing you a full hour of Concordia news and analysis (Thursday, 11:00AM). They'll be followed up by The Starting Rotation, a brand news hour of sports talk, hosted by a raucous and outspoken crew of dedicated fans (Thursday, 12:00).
On Fridays, the new content spans from morning to late late night, starting with Shibuya Crossing, your best source for J-Pop, J-Rock, Visual Kei, and more, brought to you by a dedicated fan of Japanese cultural exports (Friday, 9:00AM). The afternoons will take you halfway across the world with Safari, a fun and upbeat show that explore music from across the African continent (Friday, 2:00PM). Finally, you can take a tour of the wee hours with The Dead of Night, a show that starts with lively talk and electronic music but becomes more relaxed over the course of the show, ending with comtemplative piano-based music (Friday-Saturday, 12:00AM to 6:00AM).
This Fall also saw the return of two favourite CJLO alumni. Acronym, formerly the host of The Letter B, has decided to show us a brand new side of his repertoire, showcasing the music you'd hear in the elusive Third Room of a quality nightclub (Sunday-Monday, 12:00AM). Then on Monday mornings, wake up to New Media and Politics 2.0, where the unmistakable voice of Karl K. punctuates a delightful set of Jazz with an opinionated dose of political news (Monday, 8:00AM).
And those aren't the only movings and shakings. Fans of hip-hop will be glad to see that we've consolidated our Tuesday evening hip-hop lineup with the addition of Stroll Around the Groove (Tuesday, 8:00PM, formerly on Thursdays) and The Hypnotic (Tuesday, 11:00PM, formerly on Mondays). They're joining The Phantastiq Cypha and Beats from the East to create a six-hour behemoth of hip-hop, funk, and soul (Tuesday, 6:00PM to 12:00AM).
What you won't hear on Tuesdays is the Purple Carrot. Not to worry though! Host Anna will now be in on Thursdays with the latest indie-pop, rock, and freak folk (Thursday, 1:00PM). Meanwhile, Maiden Voyage sails to Mondays to combine forces with With Gay Abandon for two hours of the best in female-fronted and queer music (Monday, 4:00-6:00pm ). This means that everyone’s favourite chart show, Charts and Crafts, is now wishing you a TGIF (Friday, 12:00-2:00PM) and The Death Metal Disco Show is amping up the end of your week with the a hype-filled selection contemporary electronic music (Friday, 3:00PM)

Do Not Affect A Breezy Manner is the début full-length album by Montreal three-piece band Freelove Fenner. The trio consists of Peter Woodford, Caitlin Loney, and Michael Wright, and their album offers 18 tightly-produced and restrained tracks, none venturing much beyond two minutes. The excess fat has been trimmed almost as if the band were on a diet of musical minimalism, which ensures that each track is reduced to its basic necessities.
At first listen there seems to be a fragmented feeling to the album given the number of tracks, their many ideas and short duration. However, after listening to the album several times, I found that it actually offers a coherent venture from start to finish. This album comes at you as a sonically-produced whole, with each track melting together to create one cohesive aural experience.
Nevertheless, there are several tracks that I found to be real highlights on this album. It begins strongly with "In The Sound", a track that combines Wright's thumping drums, a steady groove from the bass and a cry from the guitar. These elements frame the sound, which then allows Loney's voice to dance methodically around; it's hypnotic. "All Things Break Through" begins with a shimmering guitar lead and a simple and effective drumbeat charging forward. Eventually the vocals come in and echo just behind it all, which gives the track a cool and dream-like feel. There are elements of this track that remind me of early Talking Heads, especially off something like 77 or More Songs About Buildings and Food. "Lash + Brow" comes at you with a smooth feeling, the guitar and vocals strutting along.
This album is like an 18 course meal, and each course has a distinct feeling and can be enjoyed individually, but it's best experienced as a whole. Do Not Affect A Breezy Manner is a great début and one that I recommend.
Final rating: 4/5
