This is Going to be Ryan Olcott’s Year: An Interview

“I felt awkward and weird most of the time because I didn't know shit, but now I know shit,” Ryan Olcott tells me, referring to how much has changed since he and his band, 12 Rods, last released new music. “My Year (This is Going to Be)”, came as a happy surprise to a devout, yet ever-growing fan base upon its release back in April; being the first new 12 Rods single in over 20 years.  I had the opportunity to talk with the Minneapolis musician, producer, singer, and lyricist over what lapsed into a two-hour phone call to inquire about his latest album If We Stayed Alive, releasing July 7.


Image+Nation Film Festival: an Interview

From November 17th-27th Image+Nation, one of Canada’s pioneering film festival of queer stories, returned to the city. This year the festival celebrated a milestone anniversary of 35 years. Death Kult Over Black Congregation: The New Wave of Chinese Black Metal

In 2019 and 2020, Pest Productions, A black metal label from China, released two compilations of emerging Chinese black metal on Bandcamp. New bands with a diverse range of black metal subgenres were introduced in the compilations, including old school bm, blackened death, dsbm, nihilist bm, black/thrash, post bm/blackgaze, symphonic bm, as well as folk bm, which gave birth to the New Wave of Chinese Black Metal. This year in January, Pest Productions have returned with the third compilation, bringing more talented Chinese black metal bands to overseas metal fans (I posted links at the bottom of the article of the three compilations which are free to download on Bandcamp).


Mapping Montreal Music

CJLO has recently endeavoured upon a new initiative: the Mapping Montreal Music (MMM) project. MMM will see the production of an 8-episode podcast series, whereby we’ll be mapping our city’s musical history, borough by borough. Tasked with the project are three new members of the CJLO staff: Music Journalist in Residence Sun Noor, Music Journalist Assistant George McFarlane, and Lead Web Developer Alana DeVito.
