ANIMAZE 2015 - The Land of the Magic Flute

An Invitation into the Colourful Abyss

The audience was immediately swept into a world of mystery. Was it a dream, or was it a strange, fantastical reality? Perhaps it was both?

ANIMAZE 2015 - Notable picks from the Death and Horror block

Unless you're the adventurous type, the concept of dying and fear may sound like a very morbid, depressing, and emotionally triggering combination to see on the silver screen.

In the world of animation, portraying something as taboo can also open doors to expressing ideas that are creative and cool. As seen in the following selected picks represented in ANIMAZE's Death and Horror block, everything doesn't have to be floundered into the obscenity of darkness to appreciate an often overlooked but inevitable fact of life.

A report by Russian opposition says that hundreds of Russian troops have died fighting in Ukraine and that it has cost Russia roughly one billion in US dollars.

According to The National Post, the report was published Tuesday by opposition activist Ilya Yashin, who completed the research after the death of the original author Boris Nemtsov in February.

Entitled “Putin War,” the 64 page report draws on media accounts, testimonies from relatives and other representatives of dead soldiers as well as confidential sources.

However, the Russian Defence Ministry denies that any of their soldiers have fought in Ukraine, those who have joined the armed separatists were only volunteers.

192 forest fires have been recorded so far this year in Quebec, according to the province's forest fire prevention agency, SOPFEU.

In a report by CBC News, SOPFEU representative Eloise Richard says that humans are to blame for burning dead leaves and other waste.

The report comes as a fire destroyed the scale of two football fields worth of vegetation last week in a town near Sept-Îles.

Most of Gaspésie and the Lower St. Lawrence is under high risk, while Southern Quebec is under an open fire ban.

Comedian David Heti releases album that showcases his trickster spirit

“It was ok” is a self-produced stand-up special, originally released independently by David Heti, and now available through Stand Up! Records. It is available as an audio recording and also with video; the special was filmed in front of a live audience at Grumpy’s here in Montreal, that fact alone makes me counsel you to buy it. It is also quite funny.
