Public Service Alliance of Canada sues federal government

The largest union in Canada is taking the federal government to court.
 
The Public Service Alliance of Canada represents 140,000 employees in the federal public sector.

Last fall, the Conservatives introduced Bill C-4 which allows the government to keep employees providing essential services from going on strike.

The union is arguing that the bill violates sections of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and should not be enforced.


UN declares Crimean referendum illegal

The United Nations General Assembly deemed the referendum that led to Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula illegal, Thursday.

According to The Globe and Mail, the assembly also affirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

One hundred countries were in favour of the vote on the Ukraine sponsored resolution, with 11 countries opposed, and 58 abstaining.


Concordia awards Loyola Medal to Clara Hughes

Olympic medalist Clara Hughes was awarded Concordia's Loyola Medal on Thursday.

Hughes is a six time Olympic medalist in cycling and speed skating.

She is also affiliated with the Bell's Let's Talk movement as the national representative for mental health awareness.

Hughes arrived in Montreal on March 26th after a 12,000km, 110-day bicycle trip across Canada.

Protesters demand answers about Malaysia Airlines flight 370

Relatives of passengers on board the missing Malaysia Airlines flight clashed with police outside Malaysia's embassy in Beijing yesterday.

According to the BBC, the conflict arose after Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said the plane had ended its journey in remote seas south-west of Australia.

Several fights broke out as protesters threw water bottles and tried to storm the building, demanding to meet the ambassador.

Recent satellite data that showed the flight's final automatic signal is still being investigated, as the search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370 continues.


Couillard challenges Marois to release financial documents

Philippe Couillard, leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, challenged Premier Pauline Marois to release her financial records.

Couillard has pledged to post his own documents online this week.  

He challenged the rest of the Province's leaders to do the same.

Marois, leader of the Parti Quebecois, refused to publish her records and accused Couillard of trying to distract voters. 

The Liberal leader told reporters that he just wants the new leader of Quebec to be transparent and trustworthy.

Quebec Solidaire's Francoise David agreed to publish her own records if the rest of the leaders did.


Canada funds project to eliminate nuclear weapons

Canada will pledge 28 million dollars towards elimination of nuclear weapons, according to CBC News.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed the pledge at the nuclear security summit held at the Hague, Tuesday.

The Global Partnership Programme will oversee projects aimed at stopping the trafficking of illegal weapons as well as securing nuclear facilities in high risk areas in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Canada has also ratified two international conventions it signed onto in 2012.

More violence in Venezuela

At least 31 people have died during the violent protests in Venezuela in the last month, according to CNN. 

Approximately 461 people have been injured and another 1,854 have been detained.

Demonstrators say they are fighting the shortages of food, high inflation, and high crime. 

This week’s protests mark the biggest threat President Nicolas Maduro has faced since he was elected last year.


Dave Hancock becomes Interim Premier of Alberta

Alberta premier Alison Redford has resigned following public criticism of her high travel expenses.

CBC News reported that Edmonton MLA Dave Hancock will be the interim premier until a new leader is selected.

On Sunday, Hancock will be sworn in as Alberta’s 15th premier.

Hancock is a member of the Progressive Conservative party, which will select a leader in the next six months.

He says he does not plan on running in the new leadership race.

Redford will remain as the representative for Calgary-Elbow.


Retrial for Guy Turcotte

Former Quebec doctor Guy Turcotte is going to be retried for the murder of his two children, according to CBC News.

The result of Turcotte's last trial found him not criminally responsible for the stabbing of his son and daughter in 2009, due to mental disorder. 
 
The Supreme Court of Canada denied Turcotte's appeal to overturn the retrial Thursday morning. 
 
With the trial upcoming, Turcotte's ex-wife Isabelle Gaston told CBC she hopes this will finally result in justice for her children.
