Maritime province finally passes whistleblower protection law

After years of discussion, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has unveiled its plan for legislation on protecting whistleblowers.

According to CBC News, Public Engagement Minister Steve Kent unveiled the legislation on Tuesday. 

The province's government had originally promised a law back in 2007, but was held back for review against similar laws in other areas in Canada.


U.S. sends help in finding missing Nigeran hostages

The U.S. state department announced on May 6th that it will be sending a team to Nigeria to aid in attempts to find and recover the 200 girls who were taken by the Boko Haram.

According to CBC News, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan stated publicly that he welcomed the United States' offer of support.

This comes after gunmen suspected of being affiliated with the Boko Haram kidnapped an additional eight girls on the evening of May 5th.

Michaelangelo's David at risk of falling

Michaelangelo's world-famous statue of David is showing signs of aging.

According to the National Post, the sculpture is now at risk of falling down.
David is  500-years old,17-foot tall, and weighs around 12-thousand-pounds.

This news came after Italian researchers discovered a series of small fractures on the statue’s foot.

Any indication of movement - such as an earthquake - might cause David to topple.  

Solutions considered include moving David to a quake-proof room, or to a new site outside the statue’s current residence in Florence.


Police horse ran loose in NDG on Saturday

A police horse escaped from its handler Saturday afternoon in Notre-Dame-de-Grace.

According to the Gazette, an officer was attempting to mount the horse when it got away.

The horse galloped down Sherbrooke Street and managed to evade officers for nearly thirty minutes.

Const. Danny Richer says no injuries were reported, although the horse was seen by a vet Saturday evening for minor injuries to its legs and nose.


Ontario teen throws massive house party

According to The Globe and Mail, a party thrown at a mansion under construction had police breaking up a crowed of 2,000 people.

Held in Brampton, Ontario, Friday night, high schooler Canice Ejoh sent out an invitation on Facebook to 1,000 people.

The invitation was leaked to several social media outlets and the number of attendees doubled in size.

Nearly 60 police units were sent to the scene, where they found the mansion in terrible condition.

Several attendees were charged with public intoxication, but the investigation remains open.

More people sentenced to death in Egypt

The Egyptian judge presiding over a mass trial of Muslim Brotherhood supporters has pronounced the death sentence on all 683 defendants.

According to the Toronto Star, the verdict has created widespread international condemnation from governments and rights groups.

The same judge also delivered a final verdict on a previous trial of 529 alleged militants and supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi by upholding 37 death sentences and commuting the others to life imprisonment.

 

Two women in Southern Ontario arrested

Police arrested two women in Southern Ontario for breaking into the homes of people who were attending funerals.

The two women, 26 and 45, apparently used social media and obituaries to find potential victims.

The CBC reported that over 12 homes from Hamilton to Waterloo were robbed.

The pair managed to steal over $100,000 in items and cash before getting caught.

 

New metro cars for Montreal

The new AZUR Metro car was unveiled on Monday. 

According to CBC News, Montreal Mayor Dennis Coderre explained that these new Metro cars would replace the current blue and white cars that have been in service since 1966.

The new set of 468 AZUR Metro cars are expected to revitalize Montreal’s Metro system.

These new cars include features such as wireless access and improved comfort.

If all go accordingly, the new trains will be in service by the end of 2014.

Quebec announces new ministers under Liberal gov't

Quebec's newly elected Premier unveiled his new cabinet on Wednesday.

According to CBC News, 26 Liberal MNAs will take various ministerial positions.

Philippe Couillard has named Carlos Leitao as the Minister of Finance, while Gaétan Barrette will lead The Health and Social Services Ministry.

For Public Security, Lisa Thériault will take office - making her the first woman in the province's political history to serve that position.
