A Call to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in Montreal

Mayor Denis Coderre has called for mandatory veterinary check-ups for Caleche horses after a horse slipped and fell on a metal plate downtown Tuesday.

Allegedly, the incident occurred when an inexperienced driver attempted to take an empty carriage through a construction site during rush hour.

According to Global News, the incident has re-ignited the debate over whether or not the famous horse-drawn carriages should still be legal in Montreal.

A Brossard store manager who witnessed the event, Tara Schulz, sent photos of the fallen horse to the Anti-Caleche Defense Coalition Facebook page, a grassroots movement asking for the retirement of Caleche horses in Montreal.

Montreal’s homeless census failed to notice an invisible homeless community developing in the West Island.

According to the Montreal Gazette, community worker Benoit Langevin says census takers need to be creative, and gain the community's trust; rather than going to homeless shelters or searching for people willing to complete a survey.

First Nations inspired headdresses not allowed at Osheaga

Osheaga posted to Facebook on Monday that attendees of the arts and music festival will not be permitted to wear headdresses inspired by First Nations.

The cultural appropration of Non-natives wearing headdresses has been highly critisized in recent years, as it has been commonly used as an accessory in stores and on fashion runways.

According to the Montreal Gazette, the notice read,

"Please note that First Nations Headresses are not permitted at the festival. The First Nations Headdresses have a spiritual and cultural meaning in the native communities and to respect and honor their people, Osheaga asks fans and artists attending the festival to not use this symbol as a fashion accessory"

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, The Man Behind the Music

I am not the biggest Nirvana fan but Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck hits all the right notes, and takes you on an emotional roller coaster. The perfect documentary must inform, entertain, enlighten and possibly move the audience. The documentary is the most authentic and intimate portrait of not only the band Nirvana, but also the frontman Kurt Cobain: it is one of the best films of the year so far.

'Unfriended' not your typical found footage film

It seems this day in age the horror genre gets generic after a while, with the same found footage and that thuds to make the decibel levels jump. Unfriended is different from the counterpart horror films in two ways. The first is that it takes place entirely on a computer screen, and secondly this horror teen thriller tackles the touchy subject of suicide and bullying patterns, that is a present problem that teenagers in our society are encountering. Unfriended is rated 13 + for subject matter, violence, scenes of horror and scenes of sensuality. This cyber natural thriller is directed by Russian director Levan Gabriadze.

The Montreal SPCA is at full capacity as of Thursday.

According to CTV news, the situation is common after July 1rst, which is Quebec's moving day.

The agency argues that the influx of abandoned pets is due to wide-spread no-pets clauses.

The SPCA is lobbying to prohibit such clauses, as the Quebec government tabled legislation last month regarding the status of animals as "sensitive beings".

What's Happening for Canada Day Despite the Weather

While the forecasted gloom of rain and thunderstorms may be dampening your spirits for this upcoming Canada Day, both CTV News and CBC News report that the following activities are still a go:

- The Canada Day parade will be taking place, beginning at 11 am at Fort and travelling along St Catherine Street to Place Philips. Festivities will be held, and it is rumoured that there will be cake. Enough to feed about 2 000 people.

- Speaking of cake, there will be more of it in the Old Port, as well as a 21-cannon salute and concerts including Elizabeth Blouin-Brathwaite, Lisbonne Telegramme, and Too Many Cooks. However, the inflatable attractions and hockey zone may be canceled if the rain becomes too heavy.
