Syrian President Bashar Assad made a public appearance shortly after the rebels seized two Syrian border crossings.

According to CBC News the rebels seized a border near the Iraqi town of Qaim and a border crossing with Turkey.

The rebels may have also recently been involved in the murder of three senior members of Syria`s ruling regime.

The ongoing crisis in Syria concerns Israel because they fear that Lebanese Hezbollah militants may raid Syria for chemical weapons.

A public memorial service for Jun Lin will be held this coming Saturday.

In a report by the Montreal Gazette, the memorial will take place at the Montreal Chinese Alliance Church in Hampstead. It is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The ceremony is being organized by friends of the former Concordia international student. Lin’s parents will also attend the memorial. They have also not decided whether to bury their only son in Montreal or back in China.

As we trek through the dreary sports months of July and August (unless you're a diehard baseball fan), something new has finally been brought to our attention, something that will not only give us pundits something to talk about for the next few months, but may jeopardize something that many of us in this city look forward to with uncontrollable angst: hockey season.

According to CBC, 50 homemade explosive devices have been removed by Ontario police officers from a suburban house in Barrie. Police say they have never seen so many explosives in one location.

The explosive devices were scattered through out the home. While some were hidden, others were laying out in the open. Police say it’s more explosives than they would normally find in a year.

2 more children have drowned in the family pool on Thursday.

According to CTV News, a 2 year old boy was found lifeless in a family pool in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines. This happened a mere 2 hours after another child was found at the bottom of the family pool in St-Remi. Both deaths happened in above ground pools.

Adults on the scene in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines tried to resuscitate the child with CPR. Their efforts failed and the child was pronounced dead in hospital at 4:45p.m.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel was closed for about four hours on Thursday due to a bomb threat, however no bomb was found.

According to CBC News the threat was received by the Tunnel Duty Free shop through a phone call.

Windsor police stated that the brief phone call to the Duty free Shop is the only evidence they have gathered.

They have also mentioned that they dusted a phone booth for fingerprints near the tunnel entrance on the Windsor side.

A father and his two children died in a garage fire in Warwick, Quebec on Tuesday morning.

CBC News reports that the remains found in the burning garage may belong to the residents of the home. Neighbours alerted fire fighters at around three AM.

A bitter child custody battle between the victim and his former partner may have played a role in the deaths. The father Jocelyn Marcoux had full custody of his children; however, a hearing was scheduled on Tuesday to modify that arrangement.

A 2-year-old girl drowned in a backyard pool in Laval on Sunday, reports CBC news.

Paramedics on the scene tried to resucitate the child before rushing her to the Cite de la Sante Hospital.

It is not known what led to the drowning.

This is the 41st drowning in Quebec this year; 12 more than at the same time last year.

Student groups are criticizing Montreal's two anglophone universities because of over spending on security.

In a report by the Montreal Gazette, the universities spent $500,000 extra on security during the student walkout last spring.

The FECQ and FEUQ called the extra spending wasteful and a poor management of public funds since both universities weren't as affected as francophone ones.
