Evacuation of thousands in Southern B.C wildfires continue to spread

Officials have evacuated more than 5000 people from their homes in the Vancouver area and that number will likely  increase as wildfires continue to spread across the province. 

Authorities say there's, quote, “no relief in sight” as strong winds fan flames through the province.  

The extremely dry conditions in the south of the province caused the fire to grow 150 square kilometer last week, an area as large as the city of Vancouver. 

The cooler temperature and rain in Northern B.C has helped officials relocate resources. 

24 year old Montrealer killed in Miami building collapse

Twenty-four year old Anastasia Gromova was a Mcgill University graduate and Montreal resident, who left in June on vacation with a friend to Florida. 

They stayed at the Surfside condo complex building that collapsed on June 24.

Gromova was one of at least 97 other people found dead at the scene. 

Update: Canada offers alternatives for Afghan interpreters in critical situation

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced last week a critical situation, as the Taliban threatens the lives of workers who aided Canadian troops during the war in Afghanistan.

Canadian officials are in Afghanistan to develop a program to help get workers to safety quickly. 

Details on the program are not known yet but, Medicino said it will welcome workers and their families as refugees.

He also said that the number of Afghans who are eligible will be in the “ thousands.”
