The Republicans won control of the Senate in the US mid-term election on Tuesday.

According to BBC News, the Republicans easily gained the six seats they needed, even though some votes still need to be counted.

Citizens are evacuating the village of Pahoa in Hawaii because of a recent volcano eruption.

According to BBC News, lava from the nearby Kilauea volcano is advancing at about five to ten yards an hour.

With Halloween just days away, it’s time to settle in for some cold nights and some good horror. While you can never quite go wrong with classics of the genre, whether Universal monsters, 80s slasher or contemporary torture porn, part of fear and part of horror is diving into the unknown. While Canadian cinema does not have a particularly strong reputation in the minds of its citizens, Canada has always had a flair for genre cinema and horror in particular. Maybe it’s the history of surviving the unknown and often frightening elements, as well as the detached sense of dislocated identity associated with being so close to United States.

Death in St-Alexis after car crashes into house

A woman is dead after a car crashed into her house in St-Alexis, Quebec on Sunday morning.

According to CBC, her husband was severely injured in the crash.

No evidence of Islamist ties to Ottawa shooting

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird made a statement Thursday saying that as of yet, there is no evidence tying Ottawa shooter Michael Zehaf-Bibeau to Islamist extremists.

According to the BBC, Zehaf-Bibeau was not identified on the Canadian spy agency's list of high-risk individuals prior to the attack.

The nation's capital was thrown into chaos Wednesday when an armed gunman shot and killed a member of the Canadian Forces and then began shooting on parliament hill.

According to the CBC, shooter Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was killed in the Centre block by a parliamentary guard.

The building and the surrounding area was on lockdown for the better part of the day while police handled the situation.

Victim Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was pronounced dead after being rushed by ambulance away from the scene at the Canadian War Memorial.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper addressed the nation live Wednesday evening, calling the shooting an act of terror.

Possible misuse of contractors

Quebec's anti-corruption unit raided eight Montreal homes, Tuesday.

According to CBC News, this development may be related to an investigation regarding misuse of contractors paid by the Jewish General Hospital.

US labelling laws found to be biased

The United State’s meat labelling laws have been overturned after the World Trade Organization ruled them discriminatory against Canada’s beef and pork industries.

According to the Toronto Star, America’s labelling laws were biased against exports from Canada and Mexico, giving preferential treatment to its own meat and costing the Canadian industry over a billion dollars a year. 

Hunters allowed on Heron Island

The Quebec government has announced that hunters will be allowed on Montreal’s Heron Island for the first time.

According to CBC news, the small island in the Saint Lawrence River has experienced a large growth in their white-tailed deer population.
