Blow Your Speakers!

So usually I use these little opportunities to blather about how a given album makes my berries tingle, or to daydream about just how delicious Devin Townsend's skull must be, but this is Metal March gosh dangit! The usual potty mouth stream-of-consciousness, though truly a dynamic form, just won't cut it; I need to dork it up hardcore. I need to talk some serious shop with you other dorks out there about a little something we like to call the heavy metals. Tungsten is my favourite. Oh god I'm so lame.

Black Muses

Place-des-Arts is a very important arts center for this city and as the largest arts complex in Canada it is well renowned and respected. So its no small thing that the Montreal's Black History Month roundtable and Place-des-Arts have been collaborating for the past four years to bring Black-centric expositions to the public in the espace culturel Georges-Émile-Lapalme during Black History Month. This year's exposition was named Black Muses and featured 12 Black female musicians who have greatly impacted Canadian music and paved the way for their sistren.

Daughter @ Théâtre Corona

Presented by Evenko

The indie folk band Daughter was in town on Saturday, March 5th, returning for a second time to a sold out Corona Theatre. They met an enthusiastic crowd as they took the stage; filling the intimate setting provided by this unique venue with their slow, melodic make you feel things kinda music. Lead by the stunning vocals of lead singer Elena Tonra, fans were immediately captivated by every sound the London, England based trio produced. Elena could barely get a word in between the cheers of adoring fans after their opening song "How" letting out a nervous giggle and thanking everyone for being there.

CJLO Goes Metal for Metal March

The first ever Metal March is upon us, and that can mean only one thing... once again, some of CJLO's staple shows have thrown their previous format right out the window and embraced their darkest side. As part of their rebrand and relaunch, these shows have unveiled brand new logos that embody their new sounds.

Metal Monday - Top 10 Albums of 2016 So Far

DJ Philliam from Turn On The Darkness (Tuesdays 2 PM) narrows down his picks for the top 10 albums of 2016 (so far!) for this edition of Metal Monday.

10. Varg - Das Ende aller Lügen. Was not really expecting this at all. This album blew me away, knowing that this blends elements of modern metal/Viking death metal and Metalcore? Yeah you heard me right! Lots of catchy and head bangin' tunes in this album. It's definitely worth a listen.

COUNTDOWN AT THE MOVIES 2015

Before we start this countdown, let's state the obvious: there are some great films released this year that I haven't gotten around to seeing yet. Also, this list is ever-changing, so as 2015 becomes 2016 you can check back as we update it via Letterboxd. A big thank you to guest contributor and movie aficionado Sean S.

TOP 10 COUNTDOWN

TV Binge 2015!

Many people know me as the movie guy, and for sure my list of the Top 10 Movies of 2015 is on way, but let me start out by reflecting on the best in television this year. Here are seven shows that I have been binge-watching, and a bonus video game!

A look back at Iceland Airwaves 2015

Reykjavik, Iceland - November 4-8, 2015

Participating in Iceland Airwaves as a Canadian is sort of like stumbling into a house party full of someone else's tight social circle—except everyone is excited and glad you came and there are one thousand other people who accidentally stumbled into the party too and now you're all friends. It is the kind of festival were almost every shop, café and hostel along the main downtown strip doubles as a venue throughout the week creating space for the "off-venue" no wrist-band-required shows—hugely accessible to people officially participating in the festival as well as people who do not purchase passes.
