Viet Cong - Viet Cong

Viet Cong is the self-titled debut by this foursome from Calgary. This album is the follow up to last year's Cassette EP, and it's chalked full of sonic whines, hums and murmurs all set in a kind of impending doom-like atmosphere. The album often seems to musically wrestle between pessimism and optimism; a sense of doom often interrupted by bursts of hope.

The New Pornographers @ Virgin Mobile Corona Theatre

Presented by Evenko

I fell in the love with The New Pornographers when I was twelve years old. I was an awkward pre-adolescent with truly, utterly terrible taste in music. But then I discovered the Vancouver-based indie rockers and their 2003 sophomore album, Electric Version, and I knew I found something special.

The Katy Perry Halftime Show Spectacular- A Review

‘Roar! Yeah Baby ooh Baby yeah!’

As many of you know, last night a Sports happened. The annual event, known colloquially as the ‘Super-Bowl’ involves a contraindicated mixture of homemade nachos of questionable quality to be guzzled down with what I am assuming is micro brewed beer. It’s the one thing we all do collectively as North Americans so I hoped you watch because who’s side are you on? Seriously, 120 million people watched this thing last year, making it the most watched television event of all time, topping the MASH finale. Fun facts, right? Does anyone even remember MASH? It doesn’t matter.

'Blackhat' is thematically rich but suffers from narrative confusion

Michael Mann’s Blackhat opens with a heavily computer generated map of the internal workings of a city nuclear power plant. Shifting perspectives, rushing along power lines and electrical circuits we are thrust into a complex interior system. As we rush into the final moments of the sequence, the lines finally run a blood red before exploding: this sets the scene for an international hacker thriller in which technology becomes a mirror for the human body as well as society itself. The incredible digital landscape of the opening sequence soars like the Beyond the Infinite sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey - but tactile, mechanical and fragile.

Video Journey to Le Salon de l'amour et de la seduction

On January 18th 2015, Sage A.S.S and Clara P.S embarked on a journey peppered with whips and groans, unveiling the characters of Montreal’s Sex industry. They interviewed a porn star, a BDSM baby, a man who carves penises out of wood and a handful of other interesting people.  They left tired, a little bit unsettled, but thoroughly satisfied.

Samson and Dalilah by Camille Saint-Saëns

Presented by l'Opéra de Montréal

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Samson and Delilah, a brief summary of the story as presented in the opera will precede the review of the show:

Act 1 – A Square in Gaza
The Hebrews are being held in slavery by the Philistines. Samson, bestowed with incredible strength by God, encourages them to have faith in their God and hope for the future. Abimélech, governor of the city, arrives with guards to mock, discourage and oppress them. Samson beats Abimélech in a fight and encourages his people to revolt. They win and the High Priest of Dagon (one of the gods worshipped by the Philistines) is angered.
