The stage at MTELUS had been transformed into a queer rockstar fairytale. Various instruments lay scattered around, framed by a giant golden picture frame held aloft by four bleeding hands with 'Cheap Queen' monogrammed behind on an enchanted forest painting. Literally a dream.

An all-star lineup of Montreal female music artists gathered together to raise money for Chez Doris, a women’s shelter here in Montreal, at Casa Del Popolo on October 10th. Flying under the banner of Grrls Groove, the evening was hosted by famed CBC broadcaster Emily Brass and CJLO’s own Krystal St. John. Also in the house providing some great beats were CJLO DJs SugarFace Nene and Lady Oracle.

For At The Movies Reviews on location Remi was able to chat with Chris Dainty about his short animated feature Shannon Amen being showcased at this year's
Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma. Using Animation (2D, Stop motion, and Icemation) along with archival footage, Dainty brings his friend
Shannon Jamison’s story along with her art to life. Remi chatted about the animation techniques used to tell the story, as well as Dainty's process of emotions while making the film.

What if we took a comedy director seriously? I feel like this is the question that notable R-rated comedy director Todd Phillips proposes to the audience with his newest film, Joker. For an example of a past attempt, he directed 2016’s War Dogs which took an interesting spin on a serious war story like that of Americans fighting in the Middle East.

Everyone coming from somewhere, fitting their schedule to make things work, until they sit down to watch this movie, which they slowly realize is becoming more of a reflection into their own lives rather than an escape. 
 

Oh Sees bring massive tour to Le National, squeaky toys and all

What better way to stave off the increasingly colder weather for a night than with not one, but two fiery experimental rock sets? Le National was treated to an evening of heat on Oct. 15th, as long-running garage punk outfit Oh Sees (formerly Thee Oh Sees) brought their colossal 2019 tour to town. A crowd made up of both newcomers and die-hard Oh Sees followers transformed into a sea of moshers and crowdsurfers amid an explosion of synths and thunderous bass – enough to test the boundaries of your favourite concert earplugs.

Many topics were discussed, including how films get selected for the festival, major thematics of this year's films, rewarding aspects about the job, and how exclusive movies from streaming-only services make their way to the festival. FNC 2019: Highlighting this Year’s Gems in Film

The Festival Du Nouveau Cinema is always a highlight of the year for me as I get to see films presented that end up becoming yearly favourites. During the festival’s most recent edition, I was able to catch Roma from director Alfonso Cuarón on the towering screen right in the first row. Simply put, there are always some undiscovered gems that are destined to be well received from the audience.
