The fifth edition of Pouzza Fest, Montreal's punk music festival, kicked off the summer festival season. Or should I say, slammed and surfed over the Victoria Day weekend. Taking place at several locations spread out through downtown Montreal and the red light district. Headlining the festival was Municipal Waste, and this year the outdoor stage featured more bands than ever, with such notables as The Bruce Lee Band and The Planet Smashers.

Montreal has no shortage of festivals. There are so many in fact that some might not even land on your radar screen. Don't let that be the case with the upcoming Montreal Sketchfest! From May 21st to the 30th, Le Nouveau International is producing the 10th Anniversary of Montreal Sketchfest at Theatre St. Catherine (264 Sainte-Catherine E.) and the Montreal Improv Theatre (3697 Saint-Laurent). For those of you who are not familiar with sketch comedy, think Saturday Night Live or This Hour Has 22 Minutes – short vignettes of crazy characters, designed for maximum laughs in quick succession.

Comedian David Heti releases album that showcases his trickster spirit

“It was ok” is a self-produced stand-up special, originally released independently by David Heti, and now available through Stand Up! Records. It is available as an audio recording and also with video; the special was filmed in front of a live audience at Grumpy’s here in Montreal, that fact alone makes me counsel you to buy it. It is also quite funny. 

'True Story': The Lifetime Movie Staring Hollywood Actors

There is something to be said about our culture being addicted to true stories. Especially when they involve scandals and murders. From Dateline NBC, Nancy Grace and most recently The Jinx: The Life And Deaths of Robert Durst. There are also the made for TV Movies that Lifetime produces. Even though True Story would have been great as a Lifetime movie of the month, it is on the big screen. The film stars Jonah Hill (Superbad, Moneyball, The Wolf of Wall Street) and James Franco (This is The End, 127 Hours, Spring Breakers, Instagram feeds), as well It is the Directorial Debut for Rupert Goold for this true story. 

'Danny Collins': Karma Catches Up With Al Pacino

Imagine receiving an inspirational letter from John Lennon later on in life. This is what happened to Steve Tilston, and it is the basic premise for the drama comedy Danny Collins. Instead of being the general audience film, it takes risks with it's 13 + rating. The film stars Al Pacino (The Godfather Trilogy, Scarface, Scent of a Women), Christopher Plummer (Beginners, The Last Station), Annette Bening (American Beauty, The Kids Are All Right), Jennifer Gardner (Alias, Dallas Buyers Club) and Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire, Blue Jasmine).

CTZNSHP - All Things To The Sea

All Things To The Sea, the sophomore album by Montreal's CTZNSHP, is chock-full of large sounding, arena-filling music. When discussing the scale of sound, the word "big" can feel like an understatement. The LP is produced by Jace Lasek, who has also worked with Wolf Parade, Young Galaxy, and Besnard Lakes. The album resonates with new wave and post punk sounds and aesthetics, the likes of which will have you hearing the influences of The Smiths and Joy Division.
