T.I. @ L'Olympia - January 29th, 2017

I'm not one to normally go to concerts, but this time, I decided to make the move—especially seeing that it was T.I., and and it would've been his first time coming to Montreal! Needless to say, I had some high expectations for the concert.

Excited and enthusiastic, I got to L'Olympia early to get a good spot to see the big man himself.

However, the crowd didn't seem too enthusiastic in the beginning. The first set of artists who came out really didn't get the crowd hyped enough for the main show. Some went so far as to attempt crowd surfing, which didn't go well and ultimately didn't work. I think everyone was just waiting for the main event.

Gene King / Great House Music / Tonight 2-4am

Yes you heard right, the Godfather of House Music himself, Gene King, will be live in CJLO studio's this Saturday, Feb 18th, 2-4am (Friday night for some)

Growing up in Montreal in the 70s and 80s, Gene King was well surrounded by music. He had an interest in playing instruments at the age of 13 but quickly discovered his passion for djing there after, playing high school dances and roller skating rinks.

Last weekend saw a benefit concert at the Rialto Theatre for the families of the victims of the Quebec City mosque shooting, where a group of Canadian DJs, singers, and rappers came together in support of a very good cause. The audience raised nearly $5,000 through tickets, donations, and merchandise according to Dan Seligman, the creator-director of Pop Montreal.

Black Marble @ Le Ritz - February 10th, 2017

I have been looking forward to seeing Black Marble, the dreamy coldwave synth pop duo from Brooklyn, for quite some time. I knew I needed to see them, in part because their music has been occupying my brain since their latest album It’s Immaterial was released, but also because I was curious what the physical manifestation of their music could possibly be like. There is something about their music that carries with it an air of mystery.

Is It Time? - Therrien's Road with the Habs

It always happens sooner or later, every hockey season in Montreal. The panic has set in. As of February 8th, the Montreal Canadiens have lost four games in a row, the latest against the weakest team in the league, the Colorado Avalanche. I'm reluctant to ask the question, because Michel Therrien is the coach I have enjoyed watching the most in the last few years. His interviews and post-game scrums are always funny, win or lose—he is, in my eyes, very entertaining. However, ownership does not care about entertainment, they care about only one thing: a winning record. So, whether it's listening to sports radio or watching the last game's performance, I have to ask myself: is it time?

An Interview with Katie Stelmanis of Austra

When January 20th, 2017 was selected as the release date for Austras third album, Future Politics, the group did not have in mind that they would be sharing it with the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States. Regardless of the outcome of the U.S. election, Katie Stelmanis, Austra’s principal songwriter and overall mastermind, wrote the album as both a rejection of worldwide trends occurring in the past several years and as a possible way forward from here on out.

Kid Koala on Waves of Honey

Tomorrow night on Waves of Honey, Kid Koala will be calling in for a short interview to discuss his latest album "Music to Draw to: Satellite," in collaboration with Emiliana Torrini. The Canadian DJ, turntablist and musician music travels from classic hip hop beats, breaks, and hints of heavy guitar, to electroacoustically filled soundscapes. Tune in Sunday, February 5th at 10 p.m.

Go Stingers Go!

Neal Morse @ Club Soda, January 31st 2017

January 31st, 2017 was already going to be an eventful day before it was announced that, prior to the Neal Morse show that night, Mike Portnoy would be doing a meet and greet at Steve's Music Store on St. Antoine. I have been following Dream Theater since I discovered the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulene album and got hooked by the song “The Glass Prison”, which blew my mind completely. I finally got the meet Mike Portney, the man behind the giant kit.
