YEAR IN REVIEW 2011: Osama Bin Laden Killed
The U.S. Army killed Al-Qaeda’s leader Osama Bin Laden in May.
The slaying put an end to a decade-long manhunt.
Bin Laden was believed to be the mastermind behind the September 11 World Trade Centre Attacks.
The U.S. troops found him in Pakistan ten years later and shot him in the eye during the operation.
He was hiding in a compound in the city of Abbottabad.
American authorities never showed images of his body to the public.
He was buried at sea a few hours after the operation.
The conditions surrounding his killing remained vague.
But the death of America’s most wanted terrorist gave an important boost to Obama’s declining popularity.
