STM misinterpreting Bill 101, says lawyer

A civil-rights lawyer has claimed that the STM is wrong when it says Bill 101 forbids them from using bilingualism when dealing with the public.

According to the Montreal Gazette, high-profile lawyer, Julius Grey, said that the transit agency has an obligation to serve their customers in the best way. Their client base are locals, and tourists who do speak English on a regular basis.

Grey said that there is nothing in the bill that says a significant minority shouldn’t get served because they can’t speak French.

There are several instances in twenty-twelve that had altercations between English-speaking clients and French-speaking employees of the STM.

Unlike the STM, the AMT, a separate provincial transit agency which serves Montreal and its suburbs require employees to speak English to clients who need it.
