After years of protest, a statue of Edward Cornwallis was removed from a park named after him in Halifax, Nova Scotia last week.

According to CTV News, demonstrators played drums and sang Indigenous honour songs as dozens gathered to celebrate the statue’s removal on Sunday.

Activists have been protesting the commemoration of the Halifax founder due to his 1749 scalping proclamation against Mi’kmaq inhabitants.

Members and allies of the LGBTQ community gathered at a Toronto church to remember the citizens who were killed by Bruce McArthur on Sunday.

According to CTV News, the service celebrated the lives Majeed Kayhan, Andrew Kinsman, Selim Esen, Dean Lisowick and Sorush Mahmudi.

Senior Pastor Jeff Rock of the Metropolitan Community Church reminded those in attendance that this is a time to come together in solidarity around marginalized communities and to support those affected by the loss of their loved ones.

Moroccan rescue services removed 16 bodies from the ocean after they were discovered in the water by crew members of a Spanish ship.

According to BBC News, it is believed that those who perished were migrants from sub-Saharan Africa hoping to find asylum in Europe.

The exact death toll has yet to be confirmed as rescue services continue to search the waters.

At least 243 people have died or gone missing this year while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
