Human rights commission slams Bill 78

Quebec's Human Rights Commission said on Thursday that Bill 78 impedes peoples' fundamental rights.

According to CBC NEws, the commission detailed in a report that Bill 78 doesn't respond to minimum requirements written out in the Quebec Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The law was passed this past May at the height of the student protest over tuition increases. It lays out strict rules for protests with 50 more people; they must provide the route to police 8 hours in advance.

The commission also said that numerous sections of the bill violate the charter. The Liberals, however, cited one section in the charter which played a motivation for the introduction of the bill.

The law has been criticized by student groups and civil rights advocates since it passed on May 18th.
