FRINGE 2015: Cootie Catcher teaches us how NOT to f*ck up.

How would you feel if you had to confess extreme lustful adventures in bed to a group of people you don’t even know?

Scary, isn't it? The obvious answer for many linger along the lines of apprehensiveness, distaste, and shame – as any average human being believes.

But for New York-based playwright Lucas Brooks, it is that stigma he's challenging as he invites us to open our heart and minds to experience his playful, hilarious and eye-opening hour-long one-man monologue-slash-musical-showcase-slash-interactive stage play at the Mainline Theatre, called Cootie Catcher.

Lucas puts together subtle references of the polka-dot ornamented origami paper fortune teller toy to feed on the audience’s curiosity. In essence, that hand-made product is eerily enough a symbolic representation of his own (mis)fortunes, sharing his stories about sleeping with various guys of various kinds. Few have been lucky, many unfortunate.

But not woe is all and quixotic, as you find yourself seeing random intermissions of Lucas dancing to various kinds of pop and electronic tunes to help buffer the shock and awe, and you may ask what makes Cootie Catcher stand out? Perhaps its the playwright's energetic charisma to humorously lift away the fears we experience when we talk about sex. In other words, he is telling us that it’s okay to share our experiences and admit our mistakes, and perhaps it may be better just that way.

Who knows? Cootie Catcher may just be a viable alternative option to your standard Sex Education classes.

While his TMI (too much information)-esque approach to dishing out the details may make some folks in the audience squirm, this long-time New Yorker takes credit for his bravery to share the world moments of his nearly Napoleonic sexual adventures, exploring, embracing, and experiencing the erotic world with the unknown, whether it’s those evening parties at the club, or those unpredictable plot twists sizzling under the sheets.

Lucas’ authentic, humorous, no-filter-no-filler-oriented approach to storytelling will catch you off-guard with every surprise, twist and turn up his sleeve. Cootie Catcher will definitely make you giggle, smile, and appreciate the deeper things in life that we sometimes take for granted, no matter how complex and complicated love-making can be.

And perhaps there is a lesson to all of this: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with who you do it with, as long as you got your bases covered and your guard up.

After all, who would want to get themselves f***ed anyway?

Cootie Catcher continues to play at the Mainline Theatre, located at 3997 Saint-Laurent, at the following dates and times:

  • June 18th (Thursday) at 7:30 pm
  • June 19th (Friday) at 6:45 pm
  • June 20th (Saturday) at 10:15 pm
