CJLO Presents: Battle of the Bands 2011

CJLO Battle of the Bands

It's that time of year again. Get out your boxing gloves and your dirty tricks, 'cause it's CJLO's 2nd annual Battle of the Bands! Join us on March 17, 2011 at the F.C. Smith Auditorium at the Loyola campus (7141 Sherbrooke St. W.) to see six up and coming bands from Concordia University. Remember, Arcade Fire were once Concordia students too!

Entry is just $2 at the door. Drinks are super cheap courtesy of McAuslan and there will be lots of door prizes!

Doors at 6pm and the first band is on at 7pm.

Contestants include:

The Ben Cardilli Band:

The band came together piece by piece and definitely for a lack of trying. Ben went from playing  acoustic songs alone on stage to playing with the addition of good buddy Sandro on drums and Ben's brother, who got bored of paying admission and decided to get his butt on stage. Influences include: Our Lady Peace, David Usher, Incubus, Thrice, Coldplay, Dredg, Dave Mathews Band, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.

Audio Drop-Ins:

The performance presence of I. Tobin Lippold. With a talent for words, a passion for melodies and a background in sound recording and treatment, Tobin is in a unique position to offer his notes on life. Humble, humorous and insightful, his music is an engaging blend of simplicity and novelty. Influences include: The Finn Brothers, Elliot Smith, They Might Be Giants, Anais Mitchell, The Strokes, The Swell Season, Tool, Yes, Kate Rusby, and many others.

Réal:

Music got Réal into a more positive way of thinking about life. Simple DIY hip hop with a passionate vibe.  Réal looks for exposure by joining the Battle of the Bands and open mics, as well as through friends and word of mouth. Influences include: Mos Def, Nas, MF Doom, Ghostface Killah, The Narcicyst, Nomadic Massive, Jonathan Emile, Talib Kweli, DL Incognito, Shad, Rage Against The Machine, etc.

Jake Goldsbie:

Jake is an acoustic singer/songwriter from Toronto and currently studies Creative Writing at Concordia.  Hailing from the tradition of artists like Frank Turner and the Drive-By Truckers, Jake's music has the lyrical honesty of his punk music background while also exploring a more melodic approach to music.  Influences include: Frank Turner, Drive-By Truckers, The Tallest Man On Earth, Bright Eyes, The Hold Steady, Murder By Death, Eels, The Gaslight Anthem, Bruce Springsteen, The Weakerthans, Wilco, Tim Kasher.

Fire at Rivky:

Inspired by the diversity of cultures and beauty of Montreal, Fire at Rivky brings together a group of like-minded musicians after Moises, the bands's guitar player, sought out people to play music with online. Moises has played guitar since the age of eleven and believes a lot of the band's talent comes from the vocal stylings and support of Rivky who leads the group with her talented vocals. Influences include: The Beatles and The Strokes, Sinatra, Elvis, Stones, Hendrix, Velvet, Ramones, Clash, Pixies, Pearl Jam, Oasis and MGMT.

Porn Persons:

The porn persons were all raised on a small farm off the coast of Oregon in the late 1800s.  In 1913, they discovered time travel, and began touring the past, present, and future as a band. Their sound is a blend of breakfast and french roast, and when their auras are aligned, you can hear a clicking which turns into a purring and eventually becomes a strummin' which turns into a whirring, and then it sounds like PURE PORN. Influences include: Phil Spector in later interviews, David Bowie's bod, Iggy Pop's bod, David Bowie's crotch region, Iggy Pop's crotch region, Porn of all flavours, rockin' out to the max!
