TOP 10 ALBUMS
10. Machine Head - Bloodstones & Diamonds
Though I didn't spend much time listening to this album, it made a lasting impression on me for this year. It may be one that actually I remember past the next couple months where inevitably I will forget many things on this list. Machine Head seems to be staying very samey with what they're doing for the past three albums, but hey, if it works...
9. Aphex Twin - Syro
Richard D James is a weirdo, but a loveable weirdo who makes amazing music. Why did it took so long to release a new Aphex Twin album? Why are all the song names put in some kind of weird computer language? Who knows, and who cares. The point is it's great and if you haven't gotten down with it, you are not.
8. Trap Them - Blissfucker
In addition to having the most badass name on this list, this sludgy hardcore album is easily the best of the sludge-laden records that got released this year. Of course Kurt Ballou is all over it because he is a super-genius who touches things and turns them to solid gold.
7. Mantar - Death By Burning
Hey, have you been missing a great High on Fire record? Well look no further than this half German half Turkey duo who are able to put out something far doomier than a ton of other releases this year. Don't miss out on this gem.
6. The Haunted - Exit Wounds
The Haunted prove why even though their members may or may not be total assholes, their music is consistently the best to come out of the Gothenburg scene. They haven't rested on their laurels and made sub-par music (I'm looking at you In Flames). Instead they put out this awesome album that kicks the ass of so much else. New bands, take note.
5. Biblical - Monsoon Season
Former Illuminati frontman starts a new band that is heavy on the ambience and the stoner-ness. Truly a great band to see live, it's one of the things that really locked me on how good this album is. If Biblical comes your way, make sure you do not miss them.
4. Death from Above 1979 - The Physical World
A truly triumphant return from these two guys after their last studio release in 2004. Through that time they had a fight and eventually learned the meaning of friendship, and "reunion cash grab." The difference is, though, that this is the best sounding reunion cash grab that pretty much anyone has ever done, so keep it rocking gentlemen, and I think we all learned that solo projects are not where your bread is buttered.
3. Mire - Inward Outward
So this year marks another in the sad and tragic years that Tool didn't release another album. With that in mind, might I present to you Mire. Though they were tired of being compared to Tool, the similarities were pretty striking and at no point did I get the impression that they were just copying them. Their works were wholly original and didn't have the frequent two to six minute diversions Tool likes to do. This work was the odd one that was both a breath of fresh air and a throw back to another time. Sadly, the band also broke up this year, once again reinforcing my idea that nothing good lasts and everything you love is always ripped away from you. Merry Christmas everyone!
2. Dirt Cannon - Tough Love
Holy shit. Managing to put together a stellar amount of punk and hardcore sensibilities and mixing it together with some southern flare, this Montreal group is the next continuation of those of us that listened to Every Time I Die's The Big Dirty and thought, "That's awesome! I wonder how far they'll take this," and then never hearing Every Time I Die do anything like that again. The sick thing is that these guys don't even want to really do this for a living; it's just for fun. What the fuck guys?! Get on that bull and ride it all the way "tour the country-palooza."
1. So Hideous - Last Poem/First Light
Had you told me at the beginning of the year that anything that vaguely comes close to black metal would be on my list, I would have been incredibly sceptical. However, So Hideous, with their amazing symphonic arrangements along with their black metal tinged styling, won me over thoroughly with this record. Though, if I told them that I mentioned them with black metal they would get incensed (something you can learn from my interview I did with them when it airs on January 4th, 2015), I think that they would be okay with me throwing it in as a descriptor of something they have going on. Definitely not one to be missed, so get to your nearest download space and pay them your damn money. That's the only way I get a fifty piece orchestra, so go do it.

This year, I left the little island of Montreal and travelled to Texas with Kelly from Beat The World! We spent three awesome days on the Carson Creek Ranch at Austin Psych Fest where I got to see some of my favourite bands and musicians, including Kadavar, Dead Meadow, Earthless, Shannon & the Clams, and Mikal Cronin... but the biggest dream come true for me was finally getting to watch Acid Mothers Temple perform. They LITERALLY set the stage on fire! Another stand-out was Kikagaku Moyo from Tokyo, Japan. I only caught the last 3 minutes of their set, but that's all I needed to immediately fell in love with the band. I ran to the merch table to buy their album, Forest of Lost Children, which got a lot of spins on my turntable since my return. My fondest Austin memory has got to be the people I met there. I feel so lucky! Here's a big shout out to Raul, Eric, Nathan, Karina, Chad, Sarah, Andreas, Bobcat, Zeek, Michael, and David. VC is good. Vinyl Community forever!

TOP 10 RELEASES
10) The Hidden Cameras - Age. There is only one track on this album that I have "unchecked" on my iTunes, to not play it, which I think is a good ratio. As always, this band puts together some great video footage, so be sure to check out their website to watch online.
9) Austra - Habitat. This release is a small teaser, with only 4 tracks, but they are all solid. Speaking of great videos, they released a video for the title track, "Habitat," that is so super hot I can guarantee you will watch it many times over.
8) Così e Così - Boi Meet Grl. A very new release, on cassette no less, by Montreal's darling underground heartthrob. He's been very active in the local scene, and this release is a great reflection on his great taste!
7) YlangYlang - Am I being overdramatic?. Another lovely local babe, this full length release has been grabbing the attention of many esteemed music blogs and DJs. Take a listen to discover why!!!
6) Andrew Sisk - The Passing Of the Buffalo by Buckskin. I love me some good Canadiana, and this is definitely right up there in that category. This release is an homage to a book that Andrew found, printed in 1916, about the fall of our first great resource, the buffalo. The poetic words, realized through music, definitely makes you think about the state of our world, which is always a great thing to be doing.
5) Swans - To Be Kind. You know those bands that have been around forever, have received cult status, put on great shows, then release new stuff, and you think to yourself, "oh why did they have to go and ruin a good thing?" Well, this band is NOT one of those bands. This album is AMAZING and gives me such hope for their upcoming future releases. I have decided Swans has yet to put out their most amazing album yet, since all of their releases are all so strong and good. I know they have more in them! Yay for the future!
4) Various - Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966 - 1985. I have had this album on repeat since I bought it. That is a challenge, since it is on 3 LPs. A worthy challenge though. Each track is a stand alone star, together making an album that has induced small, silent tears in my eyes. Listening to it, you can get a sense of a long-lost musical craft, when people wrote about sh*t that mattered to them, not just about taking selfies or wearing fancy clothes. Sigh... That whole state of the world thing...
3) Grouper - Ruins. I know I have Grouper on all my top lists for whatever year she releases new stuff in, but there is definitely a reason for that. This latest LP is so painfully beautiful that you could almost feel the air in the room that she recorded it in. I got the special limited screen print version that was accompanied with a CD of field recordings she did in Iceland. Do I need to say more? FIELD RECORDINGS + ICELAND!! Dreams do come true...
2) Ben Frost - A U R O R A. I know there is a lot of shade cast toward Ben Frost regarding his "prima donna" attitudes, and crap he has pulled with promoters etc. Some say drama, some say particular tastes to really showcase his art form. All I can say I at least appreciate his attention to such details, and that I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!! I am actually scared to see what my iTunes playlist play count is on this album. Everything about it is so energizing, and full. My year was made when a remix version of this album was released this month, Variant. ALSO, SO GOOD!!!
1) Owen Pallet - In Conflict. Number one... so much pressure to top a list... But this album has it all! Owen Pallett is Canadian, check! Produced by Brian Eno,(whattttt???!!!) check! Every track worthy of repeat listening, check! I honestly think I have listened to this for a week solid at one point. And by that I mean, the only thing I listened to for one solid week, allll day. When was the last time you did that? You should do that with this album!! While you're at it, watch the music videos too, everything is so well put together.. Another dreamy sigh... I have been a big fan of Owen Pallett for quite a while now, and I didn't know what I would think of a new album, since the old ones set the bar high. Then he put this one out, and oops, he did it again...
Angelica hosts BVST every Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM. She is also the Art Director at CJLO and a regular CJLO Magazine contributor.

2014 was an incredible year for live music, so my top ten this year is all gigs!
1. Trigger Effect's final show
It really sucked to have seen such an amazing show under such horrible circumstances, but the final Trigger Effect show following the death of lead singer Nick Babeu in late 2013 was an unforgettable, heart-wrenching moment. The band ripped through a 20 song set pulled from the band's 10 years of music, with guest vocalists from Bionic, Hashed Out, Gallows, Priestess, The Sainte Catherines, Barn Burner, and Dig It Up, as well as famed rocker and producer Ian Blurton, and former Trigger Effect members and friends. Most moving was a performance by Nick's wife, Alyssa, on Dare to Ride the Heliocraft's "Scientific Method", and the whole night was a reminder that "you cannot kill what you don't understand / Turbo Machine does not die".
You can watch the entire set here: Part 1 / Part 2.
2., 3., 4. Kvelertak, Kvelertak, Kvelertak
This might be a bit of a cheat, but I won't apologize for it, because this year I managed to see Norwegian pangenre masterminds, not once, not twice, but three separate times, which is a feat in and of itself. If you didn't read my diary of bad (brilliant) decisions in going to see them in Ottawa and New York in the span of 4 days, you can check that out here. I also caught that Mastodon/Gojira/Kvelertak tour once more at Metropolis here in Montreal, and all I can say is, Kvelertak is easily one of the best, if not the best, touring band today, and if you still haven't seen them, you are STILL missing out.
5. Maylene & The Sons of Disaster with He Is Legend
To do a description of this show justice, it would be easier for you to climb directly inside my mind and experience my memories from roughly a decade ago. The shortest explanation is that I had an extremely complicated love/hate relationship with He Is Legend (which continues to this day), and an instant compulsive fixation on Maylene & The Sons of Disaster, who united metal and country/southern rock influences in the most cohesive and compelling way I had ever heard before. Through a series of misfortunes, I managed to not see either band, with the exception of one song by Maylene (with Schuylar Croom from He Is Legend as a temporary vocal replacement for Maylene's Dallas Taylor) in November 2009, that is, until last month There's a strangeness to living through something you should have experienced 10 years earlier... a clash between who you once were, and who these bands once were, and who you, and they, are today. All this to say, it took a LONG time for me to finally see these two bands, and it was one of my favourite moments from this entire year.
6. Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats
This show could not have been more hotly anticipated, and really, serves as a testament to the fact that it is still possible to build an international fan base through word of mouth and excellent music. Uncle Acid slowly emerged from under a Myspace shaped rock, and three inspired albums later, finally made it to our neck of the woods on their first North American tour. The wait was worth it, and the audience flipped for the band's particular blend of throwback psychedelic doom. I was particularly lucky to have interviewed the now no longer anonymous lead singer of Uncle Acid, Kevin Starrs, and interview I'm very proud of and that will re-air on the New Year's Eve episode of BVST, December 31st, 2014 at 7 PM ET!
7. Metallica at Heavy Montreal
I generally avoid outdoor shows and festivals like the plague. The heat, the dust, the unnecessary shirtlessness, it's just not conducive to the enjoyment of live music. I'll take an indoor venue with good sight lines and air conditioning any day of the week. I made an exception this year, because a hookup to see Metallica is not a offer you turn down. Now, I'm not really a Metallica fan. I know and like their songs just fine, but I didn't (and ultimately still don't) really CARE, but after I saw Through The Never, their extravagant performance film, I realized that I had to see them live, at least once, and that this was my chance... and I LOVED it. Even though they were tiny little figures 100 feet in the distance, it was awesome to hear their classic songs live, and the gigantic screens and elaborate laser show added to the experience.
8. Death from Above 1979
This makes it on here for pure sentimentality and the righting of wrongs long past. See, I was supposed to go see DFA on a couple of different occasions in the early 2000s, right before they blew up and found themselves opening for Nine Inch Nails. Most notably, I missed their show at Barfly back in 2003 because I was sick, and then I missed their last small show at El Salon in 2005 because... honestly, I don't even remember anymore. The point is, I missed seeing this band back when it would have been cool, and so I settled for seeing them this year, and you know what? That's just fine. Sure, I would have loved seeing them in a smelly dive with a barely existent stage, but hearing all my favourite songs in the cavernous expanse of Metropolis still brought a big smile to my face. These guys still got it, and now that You're a Woman, I'm a Machine has cemented its place in Canadian rock history, I hope they keep bringing it for another 10 years.
9. The Lazys
Damn Aussie bands, they're such teases. You may get a chance to see them, but that may be your one and only. Given their lack of proximity to this part of the world, unless they blow up to AC/DC levels, seeing most Australian bands live is akin to spotting Halley's comet. The Lazys already have one cross country tour of Canada under their belt, so who knows, they may wind their way over here once again, but until then, I'll remember seeing them in a dim basement bar near the entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge as part of this year's CMJ Music Marathon. If you like your rock 'n' roll unadulterated and super sleazy, you will love The Lazys as much as I did.
10. GWAR
Oderus is dead, long live GWAR. This show is fresh on my mind, and I had a lot to say about recently, so if you missed it (and all the pretty pictures from the show), you should go read it here! This may end up being my last show of 2014, and what a way to end off a year, and an era. This year in memorable live gigs started with the remembrance of a loss, a couple of gigs that made up for lost time, and is now ending with another remembrance of a loss. What remains through all of this is that, at least in the world of music, nothing ever ends, and music is forever. Here's wishing you and yours all the best for 2015... see you at the show.
Our Lady Oracle, Amrew Weekes hosts The Limelight every Saturday from 6 to 8 PM.

REBECCA M'S THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2015
There are two new albums that are scheduled to come out in 2015 that have me on the edge of my seat. The first is the buzz about The Libertines, who thankfully got back together this year. My beloved Pete Doherty is also getting all clean and shiny in Thailand, and they were just signed to Virgin Records (kinda disturbing to say the least) in the sun. So we can only hope for a brand new album sometime in 2015! The other, which has me all a tizzy is, the much anticipated album from Eddie Paul! He just released the video for his first single, "Shut Up And Dance", which was featured on the front cover of the hot British music mag, ArtRocker! So, this matched with his label, Emery Street Records, newly acquired studio Grand Lodge No.24 (formerly owned by Montreal's biggest musical export to date, Arcade Fire). I can only imagine how awesome this album will be, and it is set to be released in early 2015. Be sure to keep your eyes and ears locked on to The Commonwealth Conundrum, 'cuz we will bring it to you first!
HONOURABLE MENTION FOR 2015
This goes to Milo McMahon! I interviewed him and his band mate, Mikey Beaton, in mid-November and their performance took my breath away. According to Milo, they are working hard on a new album, but they do not have a specific release date as of yet. He did assure that he hopes to have something in the very near future.

TOP METAL ALBUMS
TOP ALBUMS
FAVOURITE CONCERTS
D.B.C. + Soothsayer + Kill of Rights + Warsenol @ Katacombes
I haven't seen such violent thrashing in a pit since Destruction/Kreator at the Spectrum circa '86 in Montreal. I refrained from joining the mayhem and signed a few CDs after my band's set and watched D.B.C. and Soothsayer from the balcony. It was like the '80s again with that ferocious fuck religion/society attitude that woke up the lame post disco/punk music scene here in Montreal back then, with a string of legendary metal/hardcore shows at The Rising Sun, Foufounes Electriques, and The Black Light. The lyrics and songs from these bands are more relevant now than ever. Those 350 fans will not soon forget this show. There's a fire to light under the asses of this present and lamest generation of kids since the '50s, that stand idly by—these are some of the bands that are doing it, flame thrower style.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers + Stevie Winwood @ The Bell Centre
The Heartbreakers were on fucking fire. Mike Campbell always blew my mind, he shredded. They hadn't played here in over 20 years. The place was roarin'. No shit, I couldn't believe the sick jams they pulled on songs like "Baby Please Don't Go", "Shadow People", "Runnin' Down a Dream" (duelling Firebirds). "Refugee" was fucking epic (duelling SGs), "Rebels", "Yer So Bad", "You Wreck Me", "I Should Have Known It", "You Get Me High", "Forgotten Man"—holy shit his new songs rip, no joke! Great show, The Heartbreakers were right on the money with the best cover of "Steppin' Stone" I've ever witnessed, and the many, many, guitars, oh the humanity!
Stevie Winwood destroyed, playing songs from his bands The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith: "I'm a Man", "Can't Find My Way Home", "Medicated Goo", "Empty Pages", "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys", "Mr. Fantasy", and "Feelin' Alright". He wailed on his keys on "Feelin' Alright" and "Empty Pages", and blew doors on his strat in "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and "Can't Find my Way Home". Winwood still has it, undeniably heavy grooves, his vocal performance was sick as well.

TOP ALBUMS
10) Coldplay - Ghost Stories. Inside of my most recent memory, being a die hard Coldplay fan, X & Y was their only album that put me though a sonic musical journey. After putting out a pop-ish Mylo Xyloto and conscious uncoupling, Chris Martin brought the band back together. Even though this is not their best work, it is nice to hear the band experimenting again.
9) Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence. What I am happy about the most is that this album made me forget "Paradise", the B side of Born to Die, where Del Rey was going more for shock value. Most in part why this album works is the back-to-basics formula and the tight production of Dan Auerbach. Hearing "West Coast" for the first time reminded me of why Del Rey is one of the coolest female artists.
8) Foster The People - Supermodels. It has been three years since the bands debut album, Torches. It is nice to see that the band has kept their uppity rock-pop free LA spirit, which is what I like the most in their music. However I was quite pleasantly surprised with their stripped down acoustic song, "Fire Escape".
7) Guardians of the Galaxy - Awesome Mix Vol. 1. So this is a bit of a cheat because all the songs are not from 2014, but hear me out. The word "awesome" gets thrown out a lot, and don't think for a minute that it's pretentious to use the word "awesome" to describe this mixtape. It varies from pop, soul, glam, and rock, while reaming in the era of the '70s and '80s. This is one of the most memorable of the Marvel film soundtracks, if not one of the best soundtracks of this year.
6) The Black Keys - Turn Blue / Jack White - Lazaretto. I could not decide who would be #5 and #6 because in my opinion The Black Keys and Jack White did some great rock albums. Through it is not as good as the Keys' El Camino, or Jack White's first solo Blunderbuss, I still found them enjoyable. The Keys' take you on a psychedelic blues rock journey and Jack White takes you on a blues rock journey.
5) Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - Gone Girl (soundtrack). Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross teamed up again to score David Fincher's new film, Gone Girl, and they capture each mood of the film. From the sweet and melodic "Sugar Storm" when Nick and Amy meet for the first time, to the eerie and dark tones of "The Way He Looks At Me". The soundtrack pairs nicely with nightmares of Rosamund Pike as Amy.
4) Ed Sheeran - X. When it was announced that Sheeran would be dropping a follow up to his 2011 album, + (which I hold as a great debut album), it was one of the albums that was on my anticipated list for 2014. Where songs might not be as deep and melodic as The A Team, X is a good album that centres around pop, R & B, acoustic ballads.
3) Beck - Morning Phase. If someone were to ask me, "Who is Beck?", my old response might have been a rap-grunge plaid-shirt wearing singer from the '90s. Then there was this year's Morning Phase by Beck. As "Cycle" crossfaded into "Morning", Beck grabbed my attention and I wanted to hear more. The haunting "Blue Moon" and "Turn Away" stayed in my mind for days.
2) Arcade Fire - Her (soundtrack). This is another cheat, but in fairness it was what I listened to the most in 2014, and I only got a hold of the "unofficial" soundtrack when my friend game me a copy this year. The music is as beautiful as the film was. Also, this can be my taking-it-back moment for leaving Her off the golden ticket nominations last year, even though it was my number one film of 2013.
1) Sam Smith - In The Lonely Hour. I first heard Sam Smith while watching an episode of Saturday Night Live with host Louis C.K. After hearing him live, I needed to hear more of this talented singer-songwriter, so In The Lonely Hour was one of the albums I was anticipating the most in 2014. When it was released, the soul/R&B Sam Smith did not disappoint, and I look forward to hearing new material in the near future.
ALBUMS THAT WERE LEFT OFF THE LIST LAST YEAR
Childish Gambino - Because the Internet
Kendrick Lamar - good kid. m.A.A.d city
UNPLEASANT SURPRISES
I did not need to have free music directly given to me, but apparently Bono did not get the memo.
SONGS
10) Coldplay, "Midnight". So this is my pick for a Coldplay song, because of the fact that it is a cool experiment. Martin's voice both echoes and gives shivers. The sound is very spacey, and reminded me of X & Y.
9) The Black Keys, "Fever". This was one of my go-to rock songs. The organ is not used enough in rock songs. The Black Keys do the instrument spooky justice in making this song.
8) Lana Del Rey, "Brooklyn Baby". This was one of the songs I did not listen to until the album was released, and it had to grow on me. The song is and ode that Del Rey, in her sweet melodic voice, echoes out her Americana singers, one of them being the late Lou Reed.
7) Foster the People, "Fire Escape". If one song emotionally moved me it would be Foster the People's "Fire Escape". Maybe because it was unexpected in their style of songs. However, the simple and haunting lyrics of Mark Foster put a human touch to an inanimate object in this stripped down to the core acoustic song.
6) Ed Sheeran, "Don't". Sheeran gives out the cool R&B vibes in this track, which blends both pop and R&B.
5) Jack White, "High Ball Stepper". This is the song that reminds me of Jack White's debut album, blending both the rock guitar and the piano. It showcases White's versatile talents as a musician.
4) Beck, "Morning". I heard this song for the first time with the If I Stay soundtrack, and this was the song that convinced me that I needed to listen to the album Modern Guilt.
3) Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, "Sugar Storm". When the first light snow started falling in November, I did not have Frank Sinatra's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" in my head, I had "Sugar Storm" in my head.
2) Lana Del Rey, "West Coast". This would be the go-to song I listened to the most this year. Nothing but the coolest vibes coming from the guitar and the voice.
1) Beck, "Blue Moon". A song that haunted me this year that has stayed with me for a while after the album finished.
CONCERTS OF THE YEAR
It is a rarity of me to go to concerts, but this year I saw The Black Keys with opening acts Cage the Elephant and Daniel Lanois, who are great artists to see live. I missed Lana Del Rey and sadly I do not foresee myself wanting to see her summer tour with Courtney Love when she returns next year. So in the spirit of my review last year, something that I view a little more.
TOP FIVE MUSIC VIDEOS
5) The Black Keys, Fever
4) Childish Gambino, Sweatpants Ft. Problem
3) Foster The People, Coming of Age
2) Kendrick Lamar, I
1) Lana Del Rey, West Coast

I've done the research (sat on my ass and binge-watched), and have compiled a list of top TV shows of 2014. For those of you not really into skiing or all-inclusive tropical island getaways, make some hot chocolate, curl up in a blanket, open Netflix, and enjoy.
TOP TV SHOWS
1) True Detective Season 1 (HBO) - A cinematic, star-studded, murder mystery crime/drama with plenty of excitement and philosophical insight. I thoroughly enjoyed its first 8-episode storyline, which came to a satisfying conclusion.
2) Fargo Season 1 (FX) - Some things just don't need spin-offs or sequels. A perfect movie like Fargo seemed to me like one of those things... until I watched Season 1 of Fargo on FX. The series takes place in the same universe as the Coen Brothers' film, and brings in an entirely new storyline with unique characters and intertwining storylines. A must-watch for fans of the film, you betcha!
3) The Walking Dead Season 5A (AMC) - With showrunners coming-and-going, the quality of TWD has fluctuated over its first four seasons. The first half of Season 5 has exceeded expectations, with many plot twists and "holy shit" moments.
4) Louie Season 4 (FX) - Louis C.K.'s Woody-Allenesque series is ripe with surrealist humour and existential crises.
5) Mad Men Season 7A (AMC) - A strong beginning to the show's final season.
6) Archer Season 5 (FX) - This show is amazingly clever and well-written. Blink and you'll miss three jokes. With a new storyline, Archer is showing that it will stay fresh for more seasons.
7) Parks and Recreation Season 6 (NBC) - Miles ahead of its network prime-time sitcom cohorts. If you enjoyed The Office in its early seasons, definitely give Parks and Rec a go.
8) Californication Season 7 (Showtime) - Not a very memorable conclusion to the series, but it was certainly good for a few laughs.

Life is a buffet, especially the parts that are literally buffets. Therefore, it is in no particular godd*mn order that I give you DJ Spacepirate's Top 9 Canadian Metals of 2014.
MUTANK - M.E.C.H. Metal. We know our thrash here. These guys do it with wit and proficiency. 'Nuff said. Fav track: "MUTANK".
Crimson Shadows - Kings Among Men. Harsh and speedy power in the vein of Blackguard. Solid, well-rounded, just the right about of wank. Fav track: "Braving the Storm".
Devin Townsend Project - Z2. OK, keep it cool. Gotta save face after last time. Ahem... Yeah, it's ok. Whatever, man. Fav tracks: "March of the Poozers off Dark Matters", and "Midnight Sun off Sky Blue".
Kobra and the Lotus - High Priestess. It was all chugga chugga and then it went meedly-mee and she was like "hwaaaaah!" Fav track: "High Priestess".
Primalfrost - Prosperous Visions. Do you need more Amon Amarth in your life? I don't, but I now have these guys anyway! Fav track: "Path of the Sky".
In the Name of Havoc - 1180 EP. Funky groovesludge. Orin will probably be annoyed/embarrassed that I put this here, but humbug right in his stupid face. I like it. Fav track: "Bloodlust Succubus".
Striker - City of Gold. Exemplary specimen of the new old school. RIYL West of Hell, Skull Fist, owning testicles. Fav track: "City of Gold".
Viathyn - Cynosure. Airy, almost soothing, yet not un-heavy melodic power metal that somehow avoids sounding generic. Fav track: "The Coachman".
Expain - Just the Tip. A unique blend of progressive thrash. Fruity notes and an oaky finish. Perhaps a hint of nutmeg. Fav track: "The King".
Honourable mention goes to Protokult - No Beer in Heaven. I'll be straight with you, I've barely listened to half of it. My problem is that the first track, "Get Me a Beer", is too awesome, such that I rarely feel much need to progress beyond it. It has earned a permanent place on my drinking metal playlist.
