French-led troops chase away rebels within Timbuktu

French and Malian troops are now in control of the Malian city of Timbuktu, since rebel forces retreated from the trading town.

According to Aljazeera News the French led soldiers were made to feel welcome by the people within the town.

French President Francois Hollande stated that France is surely winning the battle, but it will be left up to African forces to settle affairs within the northern part of Mali.

Up to eight thousand African troops will take over from the French troops as soon as possible.

Kathleen Wynne chosen as new premier of Ontario

Former Liberal cabinet minister Kathleen Wynne is officially the first woman to be elected premier of Ontario, as reported by The Guardian.

With her victory, Ontario is now the fifth province to be lead by a woman. Wynne is also the first openly gay leader of a Canadian province.


CSU asks for student input before Quebec summit on higher education

As a way to get feedback from students on what matters to them when it comes to higher education, the Concordia Student Union is asking for student opinion on what proposals should be presented to the Fédération Etudiant Universitaire du Quebec, who will represent Concordia at Quebec's summit on higher education next month. 


Two Quebec students asking for revision on fairness of student association financier

Two University of Laval students in Quebec City are asking the court to invalidate articles in Quebec’s Act Respecting The Accreditation And Financing of Students’ Associations.

According to MEdia Co-Op Montreal, this comes after Laurent Proulx and Miguael Bergeron submitted an application Wednesday to the Superior Court of Quebec opposing the fairness of seven articles in the Act.

Borough wants Quebec to pay for 2nd access

If a second entrance to the Vendome metro station is added, then Quebec should pay the entire cost says the borough of NDG-Cote-des-Neiges.

According to the Gazette, the entrance is a requirement if an added link from the station to the new MUHC superhospital is built.

Borough mayor Lionel Perez and city councilor Marvin Rotrand said that hospitals need a direct link with public transit. Also, based on the clientele, the entrance would need to be universally accessible for those with reduced mobility.

Environmental group criticizes Canada's inaction

Bay of Fundy-whale watching #1Not everyone is impressed with Canada's role in protecting the environment.

According to the CBC, the federal government is being criticized by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society for not being motivated enough in reserving marine areas for ecological protection. 

The group wanted Ottawa to have by the end of 2012, a total of 12 protected sites.


More cuts for universities in the future

A government meeting regarding the matters of higher education took place between Jan. 17 and 18 at the University of Sherbrooke.

According to the Link the Minister of Science and Technology did not deny that the $124 million cuts would continue for Universities next year.

He stated that as soon as they have figured out what the student contribution will be, then they`ll determine whether further cuts will be made.

In a document obtained by the Globe and Mail, the Assembly of First Nations is asking for reforms that include inclusion during equalization talks, as well as the right to review legislation that harmfully impacts their communities.

The creation of another corruption squad in Montreal may not have the effect it is meant to have, says a former Montreal executive in parliament.

According to the Gazette, Jean Fortier described to the one of the daily’s reporters that corruption extended beyond the construction industry.

New committee formed to save Lachine Hospital

The ``Save our Lachine Hospital`` committee threatened to go to court to prevent the provincial government from taking the institution away from the McGill University Health Centre.

According to the Gazette the Lachine borough mayor stated that he and the committee are more than willing to go to court.

He also stated that he has encouraged Lachine residents to sign their names in an online petition.

The committee was formed after the Quebec Health Minister decided to transform the institution into a local health network of the French language.

Donors have decided to put their contributions to a halt due to the uncertainty of the institution`s future.

Applebaum denies investigation rumors, creates new squad

Montreal mayor, Michael Applebaum could be the next big name in municipal politics to be investigated by the Charbonneau Commission.

In a report by Le Devoir obtained by The Gazette, Applebaum is under investigation over questionable real estate transactions he may have been involved in while he was mayor of NDG-Cote-des-Neiges.

The report by the French paper goes into detail on real estate deals that required zoning changes in the borough before Applebaum became mayor last November.


Homosexual men encouraged to donate blood in Canada

Changes may be seen in Canadian Blood Services restrictions for homosexual men.

According to CBC News, Canadian Blood Services wants to change one of their oldest policies that would allow homosexual men to donate their own blood.

The new proposal would allow homosexual men who haven’t had sexual relations with another man in the last five years to donate. That is a change over the ban of donations from men who’ve been with other men. Canadian Blood Services have received a lot of criticism for their restrictions.
