Today began bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and ready to talk radio at the panel on Radical Radio. I was especially excited for this discussion, not only because I am a self-professed radio nerd, but one of the speakers was a college radio alumni of mine, Anna Friz, from back in the day at CITR 101.9fm in Vancouver. Along with co-presenter Jeff Kolar, they discussed the cross-disciplinary aspects of radio, as art, communications, and current transmission practice, highlighting the beauty found in the instability and somewhat randomness of the signal.

I spent part of the day getting acclimatized to Durham, North Carolina, figuring out the lay of the land, so to speak.

First stop was to the Carolina Theatre to get all of my press stuff sorted. While there I got to interact with the WiFi Whisperer, by Kyle McDonald. This art installation explores the social nature of WiFi, monitoring and manipulating visitors' data and activity, and leaking more then they might realize. Whoa…

One of the great pleasures of listening to Solids' four-track EP, Else, is the wave of noise and distortion that washes over you created by the pounding drums, thumping bass, and distorted guitars. And, unlike the breakneck speed of their debut LP Blame Confusion, Else seems to show the Montreal duo of Xavier Germain-Poitras and Louis Guillemette taking their time and allowing for both the songs and listeners to breathe.

Creepy Occurrence at Concordia's Loyola Campus

A few years back, I wrote an article for the CJLO magazine about the creepiest thing that ever happened to me around CJLO studios. As I implied then, I don't actually believe in ghosts, but I would like to believe in them, if that makes any sense. I like listening to other peoples' paranormal experiences and am fascinated by the idea that fragments of the past have the ability to manifest in the present. For the most part, however, I believe that the unexplainable generally has a very real, very boring explanation.

I wasn't sure what to expect before watching Green Room. I saw the trailer and was intrigued—a thriller combining touring bands playing raucous punk rock, and the evil kingpin being played by the illustrious Sir Patrick Stewart? You had me at thriller, you sealed the deal at Jean-Luc.

"Oh just a melody, yeah that's how to please me" is a line from "Suckers" off Ra Ra Riot's new album Need Your Light, and well, they gave us much more than just a melody performing at Montréal's Bar Le Ritz PDB on Friday, April 15th. Filling the venue with their distinct synth-pop, string-infused sound, Ra Ra Riot had Le Ritz bursting with energy right from the opening song, "Too Too Too Fast", never letting the dance party stop throughout their hour-long set. Even bass player Mathieu Santos showed off his moves with some of the craziest leg manoeuvres I have ever seen.
