Presented by FFAR398B Hip Hop: Past/Present/Future

A public lecture and panel event hosted & curated by Mario Reyes (Markings), Nantali Indongo (IAmBlackGirl) and FFAR398B class instructor Marc Peters.

You are cordially invited to the third edition of Slang Rap Democracy, a discussion and celebration of Montreal hip-hop: who we are, where we're at and where we need to be.

Hip Hop: Past/Present/Future, a Fine Arts course for non-Fine Arts students taught by Marc Peters, has organized a conference with local MCs, DJs, producers, promoters and community members to discuss the issues plaguing the city of Montreal and the rebirth of a community that lacks visibility outside of the country.

The three-hour session is open to the public and will be held in the H-110 alumni auditorium. This is a free event that is meant to encourage the generation of new ideas, thoughts and open dialogue. We urge people to join us in order to help captivate the energy that is Montreal creatively, intelligently, respectfully and in unity.

LAND IN REVOLT: IMPURE GOLD
Fernando E. Solanas / AR / 2009 / 92 ' / Spanish / S.T. English

IMPURE GOLD is the first instalment of the environmental project by the ever-activist Argentine filmmaker Fernando Solanas tackling the plundering of underground resources and the ensuing contamination ending with Black Gold. Portraying stark reality full of scams, miseries, and corruption, Solanas targets the mining industry and open-air cyanide or explosives extraction of minerals and metals at the northeast of Argentina, and observes the reaction of the local public. The extraction of resources is not the only loot –royalties and taxes create another unjust wealth. Impure Gold is a film told by its protagonists: engineers, farmers, indigenes, environmentalists, inhabitants who resist.

THE NOAH Film Screening: "Death Warrior" and "Turkish Star Wars" (double bill)

"Olum Savascisi" (aka "Death Warrior")
Dir. Cetin Inanc
1984
Turkey

This might not sound like anything you know, but it's just an ultimate mishmash of horror/action/kungfu/ninja movies. How excellent does that sound!? You'll see & hear all sorts of familiar moments culled and raped 'surreptitiously' from the depths of the cinematic grave. Epic!

"Dunyayi Kurtaran Adam" (aka "Turkish Star Wars")
Dir. Cetin Inanc
1982
Turkey

Two space cadets crash-land on a desert planet, where an evil wizard seeks the ultimate power to take over the world. Although the movie borrows some background footage from Star Wars, the plot is mostly unrelated.

THE NOAH film screening: "Dead Pigeon on Beethoven Street"

eut-Etre Vintage (6029a Parc)

---------------------------------------------

"DEAD PIGEON ON BEETHOVEN STREET"
Dir. Sam Fuller
1974
Germany

Glenn Corbett stars as a detective trying to break up an international blackmail ring; Stephane Audran makes a brief appearance as a lesbian named (ominously) "Dr. Bogdanovich."
But Fuller as passionate anarchist, as destroyer of all the cozy taboos of U.S. society (see THE NAKED KISS, SHOCK CORRIDOR, and UNDERWORLD U.S.A.) exists almost alone among Hollywood directors with a perception of the direct line that runs from the personal to the social. (It must be remembered, for example, that Fuller gave Bogdanovich the idea for TARGETS.) In accordance with this deep contradiction, DEAD PIGEON is as schizophrenic as U.S. society itself. But the movie is a relief because it treats its subject, a worldwide political blackmailing scheme being investigated in Europe by an U.S. detective, as ferociously ludicrous. It takes real perversity to stage a gunfight, as Fuller does, over the heads of sweet innocent babies, with bullets flying in a maternity ward!
Excellent score by Can in the Damo Suzuki period.

Argo Bookshop Readings: Camille Martin's "Looms" and Oana Avasilichioaei's "We, Beasts"

Argo Bookshop (1915 Ste-Catherine O)

doors - 6:30pm
event - 7:00pm

FREE

----------------------------------------------------

Poet and collage artist Camille Martin grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana. A classical pianist from an early age, she earned a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music.  She has resided in Toronto since 2005. Looms is Martin’s fourth book of poetry. The title of Looms signifies the weaving tool as well as the shadowing appearance of something,  These “woven tales” were inspired by Barbara Guest’s statement that a tale “doesn’t tell the truth about itself; it tells us what it dreams about.” The strands of their surreal allegories converse, one idea giving rise to another, and the paths of their dialogue become the fabric of the narrative. In a second meaning, something that looms remains in a state of imminent arrival. Such are these tales, like parables with infinitely deferred lessons.

The work of poet and translator Oana Avasilichioaei explores history, geography, public space, textual architecture, multilingualism, sound, translation, textual and collaborative performance. Winner of the A. M. Klein Prize for Poetry from the Quebec Writers' Federation, We, Beasts is a poetry book withundeniable verve, (where) Oana Avasilichioaei upends expectations of literature and poetry in this fascinating collection. We, Beasts is a fairy tale; a book within a book; a collection of verse; a mediation on language, real and imagined and a sly social commentary all in one.
